Purpose

The Exemplary Communities Workgroup highlights quality implementation of positive behavior support in regions across the state of Minnesota. The MNPBS Network is interested in:

  1. Celebrating the excellent positive behavior support that is implemented in Minnesota,
  2. Sharing ideas and strategies that encourage interagency collaboration,
  3. Helping people reach out and learn more about positive behavior support in their region, and
  4. Making Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion a priority in PBS implementation.

Summary of Major Activities

The first step of the Exemplary Communities Workgroup has been to assess where positive behavior support is being implemented across the state. Some maps detailing these efforts are available below. The team is working on a tool for documenting examples of implementation and what types of evaluation data are available. The tool will be available here in this workgroup section soon.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Minnesota (Education)

PBIS Minnesota has been supporting school teams to implement school-wide positive behavior supports through PBIS cohort training since 2005. This map shows all the school districts in Minnesota, and is color-coded to show each district’s level of PBIS implementation along with black dots for charter schools and black squares for other types of schools/programs that have participated. To show the percent of schools that have participated in cohort training within districts, they are coded dark green if 60% of schools have participated, and lighter green if 1-59% of schools have participated.

Pyramid Model (Early Childhood Education)

In 2010, the Minnesota Department of Education announced a statewide collaborative effort to improve the social, emotional, and behavioral development of all children birth to five in inclusive early childhood settings through installation of the Pyramid Model. The Pyramid Model is a multi-tiered framework for supporting social competence and preventing challenging behavior in young children. The map shows the location of all of the school based early childhood programs, Head Start programs, and child care programs that have partnered to install the Pyramid Model since 2010.
