Community-Based Positive Support Modules
The modules in this section provide information about how positive supports work and focus on one type of practice: positive behavior support or PBS. These modules can be a helpful way to learn more about supporting people who might experience challenges in everyday life and/or when transitioning back into the community after a visit to the emergency room or hospital. There are currently four modules in this section:
- Introduction to Community-based Supports – an overview of how individual supports can be put in place using a tiered approach with increasingly intense interventions that can be tailored for each person. Includes an introductory video that is 50 minutes in length by Rachel Freeman and another 1 hour video on trauma informed supports led by John Hoch.
- Positive Approaches to Community Supports – An overview of how to assess challenges that come up using functional behavioral assessment and multiple strategies a person can choose based on why problems may be occurring. Includes an introductory 1-hour video on positive behavior support by Joe Reichle and a 1-hour preesntation on self-injury by Adele Dimian
- Skill-building Practices – This module describes how basic social interactions and changes in everyday routines and settings set the stage for positive strategies. Includes shorter, 20-minute videos that can be used for training purposes targeting skills that help create positive interactions.
- Long-term Planning & Supports – The content in this module describes what types of action planning is needed to make sure that planning processes consider how to create a consistent, long-term plan for success with a focus on quality of life across a person’s life as they grow and evolve. Includes a 1-hour video on this topic.
These modules are meant to be used to support other trainings on PBS. The content is considered to be at the “awareness level” and does not provide enough training on the subject for someone to learn to facilitate plans without additional coaching or support.
